Thomas Townsend was a Waterdhavian of inherited nobility. Prior to Thomas's birth, his father, a common man called Tofer, had been named the sole heir of a distant uncle's estate. Though the inherited title was of lesser standing and the house widely unknown, this moved Tofer and his wife Mary upward in status and wealth. Despite the lifestyle change, they maintained a deep sense humility and gratitude. These values were instilled in Thomas as well, and he was driven to become a fine young gentleman. Even as a schoolboy, Thomas displayed an understanding of the importance of rules and a strong desire to defend the weak and helpless.
Life was good for Thomas, until one day in his early teenage years when his mother was killed in a kidnapping gone wrong. The loss shook him to his core, but he strengthened his resolve and set for himself a new goal: To dedicate himself to defending the innocent, protecting the weak, and fighting the forces of evil. The years passed slowly for Thomas, but on the very day he finished his schooling, he swore to his father to not let the fate of Mary befall anyone else. Thomas bid his father goodbye and set off for a monastery to train his body and mind.
The monastery was dedicated to the Triad, whose teachings were ingrained in the martial philosophy of the monks. Thomas took these beliefs to heart and used them to fuel his training, displaying his fierce willpower through the tenacity with which he trained. Through his deeds, Thomas won the attention and favor of his masters, who had deemed him worthy of the righteous call of a paladin. The young man was sent off to a proper Triad temple to receive his divine training, where once again he excelled to the great satisfaction of his teachers and mentors.
Six years had passed since Thomas first left his father's estate, and with a fire in his heart he set out once more on his righteous journey. He traveled eastward for a time, until finding himself among the ancient rivers, hills, and forests of the Dalelands. It was here that Thomas truly began his adventure.
